In the Grimm fairytale, "The Goose Girl," a misused princess crawls into a stove to unburden her soul. It happens someone is listening. It is often what is in Heather's mind when she finds herself talking to God.

Sometimes I hope there is no god,
though it means I cry to just the air
like the girl who crawled in a stove
to tell it all she could not bear

It helps to tell something the pain
whether it is listening
to be held inside a quiet place
asks not what you're offering

and maybe God's an empty stove
a metal belly full of me
and I'm the fire lit inside
when I tell him all my suffering

I wrote myself a hymn today
to lullaby my aching soul
and crawled inside my little room
